Used with permission! I love Joe Mauer. He is my favorite baseball player. He will always be my favorite baseball player. My own child could play professional ball and I would prefer Joe Mauer to him. He is simply the best and he makes those around him better.
I waited through his high school career to see him move into professional ball. The fact that he was drafted by the Twins made that all the sweeter. Even if had been a different team drafting him he would still be my favorite player. The hometown pick just made the whole deal even more perfect.
I waited through his minor league career to see him move into the bigs. Some thought Mark Prior would have been the better pick, but I knew that when Joe got to the majors he'd show everyone that the Twins had made the right choice. I waited through his derailed first season, anticipating even more how great an addition he would be to the team.
I waited through this April for Mauer to get healthy and up to game speed; looking forward to watching him work with our young pitchers; to knock in De Nard Dog and Casilla; to help Morneau and Kubel pump up their RBI totals.
And I waited through this game to give Mauer his first Hero Of the Win in 2009.
It has all been worth the wait.
